As the Gazette reports today, murdered journalist James Foley was a 2003 M.F.A. recipient from the English Department at UMass Amherst. "Foley was recalled as a warm, outgoing, and generous man," writes Gazette reporter Rebecca Everett, "whose compassion and integrity drove him to tell the stories of those who were voiceless, even if that meant risking his life in war zones." What an awful tragedy.
